Preserving Neighborhoods by Promoting Home Ownership
In this urban redevelopment project, a high-density neighborhood near Downtown Bloomington was notably transformed. The 4 level building above, existed on a corner lot with the two adjacent apartment houses. Previously, ten families had squeezed into the multi-family property. The landlord eventually closed the property and the windows were boarded. When we acquired the 3 buildings on one lot, we decided to purchase the adjacent vacant bungalow from the landlord as well. We entered into a redevelopment agreement with the City of Bloomington to subdivide the corner lot into 2 separate lots. The corner building was demolished and the Old House Society received the salvaged architectural moldings. The remaining houses were renovated and converted into single-family homes. After the open house attracted more than 100 visitors, these Waller Homes were quickly sold, owner-occupied.
